Martin Plowman celebró su cumpleaños número 28 en la Ciudad de México, siendo uno de los pilotos que formaron parte de un Track Day organizado durante la re-inauguración del Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez el sábado pasado.
El inglés tuvo tiempo libre para platicar con “IndyCar al Día” sobre diversos temas, entre ellos, la prioridad que se ha propuesto para continuar su transición a la Blancpain Endurance Series, una de las múltiples series en las que ha estado en 2015, al volante de un Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3.
Plowman pasó dos temporadas en la Indy Lights, donde logró una victoria en Mid-Ohio y el tercer puesto general en 2010; aunque los últimos cuatro años han incluido participaciones en la antigua American Le Mans Series y el FIA World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC), el aprendizaje ha sido diferente y con varios retos, sabiendo que los modelos de la marca japonesa tendrán mucho tiempo de desarrollo.
“Creo que el mayor reto es manejar el peso, porque es un coche mucho más cargado y no tiene el mismo downforce que un coche fórmula. Así que la gran cuestión es la gestión de los frenos, de los neumáticos, porque para una vuelta con neumáticos nuevos, el rendimiento es muy alto en un coche GT, pero luego tienes que aprender lo que tienes que manejar la degradación y los frenos para hacer que duren una hora”.
Plowman, quien ha sido miembro de AJ Foyt Enterprises y Sam Schmidt Motorsports, se ha mantenido en contacto con la categoría más rápida del mundo, ya sea como espectador o como uno de los pilotos de Pace Cars y biplazas de exhibición para el público y la prensa; similar a otros pilotos y gente involucrada con el deporte, piensa que la paridad es divertida de ver.
“Ellos tienen un gran producto y ahora necesitan encontrar una manera de conseguir más espectadores, ya sabes, mejores índices de audiencia televisiva, más patrocinadores para llegar a la serie. ¿Quién sabe? Tal vez pueda volver a las ‘500 Millas’ de nuevo, pero ahora mismo mi enfoque está en los sports cars”.

Sobre las críticas en torno a la seguridad que IndyCar ha enfrentado en los últimos años, en especial a raíz del accidente de Justin Wilson en Pocono Raceway del 23 de agosto del presente año, Plowman opina que es difícil trazar una línea muy marcada entre el espectáculo, como la que se mostró en eventos como Fontana, y la seguridad.
“Honestamente no estoy muy seguro de cómo responder, porque estoy a favor del espectáculo, de la competencia, y no quiero estar envuelto en un accidente, aunque las carreras tratan de emoción y peligro; el peligro es una parte de esto, pero a la vez lo que pasó con Justin fue de una naturaleza muy rara. Sólo había una en un millón de posibilidades de que eso pudiese suceder, así que creo que tenemos que investigar formas de reducir la probabilidad de que esto ocurra”.
“Creo que si terminas diciendo ‘Oh, así son las carreras’, es un punto de vista bastante ignorante, porque hemos perdido demasiados pilotos buenos debido a lesiones en la cabeza. Así que podemos encontrar una manera de reducir ese riesgo, no necesitamos matar a los conductores. Para mí, se trata de la competición, no se trata de peligro”.
Por el momento, Plowman no ha detallado sus planes para 2016, aunque está abierto a cualquier oportunidad que toque la puerta.
“No hay nada confirmado ahora. En las carreras sólo tengo que estar abierto a cualquier posibilidad, por ahora, hay más oportunidades en el coche GT, pero si algo sucede en los fórmulas, entonces habrá que ir a donde la oportunidad aparezca. Ahora mismo estoy entrenando tan duro como pueda para estar en forma y trabajando en el simulador todo el tiempo, así que cuando llegue la oportunidad, estaré listo para tomarla”.
En cinco participaciones en IndyCar, el mejor resultado del británico ha sido un 11mo puesto en Baltimore en 2011, aunque los mayores logros de su carrera son tanto la victoria en las “24 Horas de Le Mans” como el título del FIA WEC en 2013, ambos en la división LMP2.
