Esta semana, la serie IndyCar anunció el formato de las competencias “doubleheaders”, es decir, los eventos con dos carreras en un fin de semana, así como de los “heats” clasificatorios que anteceden al Iowa Indy 250 y del cambio en la distancia de otras carreras.
1. Doubleheaders.
Recordarán que los eventos de Belle Isle, Toronto y Houston tendrán dos carreras cada una. Habrá dos formas de clasificar a los autos:
- Para la Carrera 1, se llevará a cabo una sesión de clasificación el día viernes, la cual se dividirá en cuatro segmentos, similar al sistema convencional: El pelotón se divide en dos grupos; los más rápidos de cada grupo pasará a la segunda fase, y los mejores seis accederán al “Firestone Fast Six”.
- Los únicos cambios serán la duración de la sesión de los Grupos 1 y 2, la cual será de diez minutos, en lugar de 15. Además, los equipos podrán elegir el set de llantas que deseen a lo largo de las sesiones. en lugar de utilizar un set exclusivo para cada fase.
- La clasificación de la Carrera 2 será una sesión abierta de 30 minutos, en la cual, el más rápido obtendrá la pole.
- La Carrera 1 en Toronto y Houston tendrá el “standing start”, es decir, el sistema de arrancada que utiliza la Fórmula Uno y otras series europeas, y que la Champ Car World Series implementó en 2007. Habrá semáforos similares a los que la FIA implementa. No se usará este sistema en Detroit, debido a que se debe inspeccionar el estado de la pista, de acuerdo a Beaux Barfield. En la Carrera 2, se utilizará el arranque lanzado, es decir, el convencional de la serie.
- Las carreras en Detroit serán de 70 vueltas en cada una, mientras en Toronto se darán 85 vueltas y en Houston, 90.
2. Iowa mantiene los “heats”.
Como en 2012, se organizarán tres carreras clasificatorias para el Iowa Indy 250 del próximo 23 de julio.
- Tras la clasificación cronometrada, los pilotos en las posiciones pares desde el lugar 8 competirán en el Heat 1, mientras que los pilotos en las posiciones impares desde el lugar 7 lo harán en el Heat 2. Los seis mejores correrán en el Heat 3, el cual definirá al ganador de la pole position.
- Los dos primeros lugares de los Heats 1 y 2 podrán avanzar al Heat 3, es decir, que se premiará a los ganadores de estos eventos, a diferencia del año pasado, en la cual sólo quedaban en el lugar siete u ocho de largada.
3. Cambios de distancia en cuatro.
Para incrementar la acción y reducir la estrategia de combustible desde el principio, las carreras en St. Petersburg, Long Beach, Milwaukee y Mid-Ohio tendrán cambios en su recorrido.
- St. Petersburg: Pasa de 100 a 110 vueltas.
- Long Beach: Pasa de 85 a 80 vueltas.
- Milwaukee: Pasa de 225 a 250 vueltas, tal como en muchas ediciones previas.
- Mid-Ohio: Pasa de 85 a 90 vueltas.
Esto es consecuencia de la gran cantidad de pit stops que se generaban desde la vuelta 1 en algunas carreras, debido a la capacidad de la celda de combustible de los autos. Hasta 2011, era de 22 galones, pero con la llegada del chassis DW12, hoy es de 19 galones.
