Éste es el caso de Sebastián Saavedra, quien hoy anunció su incorporación al Dragon Racing, de la cual Jay Penske es propietario, para la temporada 2013 de la IZOD IndyCar Series, la cual comienza el 24 de marzo.
“Ha sido una larga temporada baja, por lo que estoy listo para volver a subirme a un auto. Estoy muy emocionado por este nuevo capítulo en mi vida, y agradecido por todos los que hicieron esto posible”, declaró el piloto bogotano en un comunicado.
Saavedra, de 22 años, tomó la decisión de regresar a la Firestone Indy Lights en 2012, luego de competir con Conquest Racing un año antes, sin tantos resultados positivos y el reducido patrocinio con el que quedó tras esa misma campaña. A pesar de obtener sólo un triunfo el año pasado (Barber) y finalizar en cuarto lugar en la tabla, el colombiano nunca dejó de tener conexión con la categoría mayor, al competir en tres carreras para el AFS/Andretti Autosport, con mejor resultado de 15to (Sonoma); no obstante, la temporada baja fue discreta para él, ya que se empezó a saber de este acuerdo desde la semana pasada, cuando publicó en su cuenta de Twitter un contrato firmado.

El colombiano llega a un equipo que también ha tomado decisiones arriesgadas: Dragon Racing empezó el año 2012 con mucha desventaja, por poseer el motor Lotus en las primeras cuatro carreras. Para las “500 Millas de Indianapolis”, se cambiaron a la planta Chevrolet y llegó a instancias legales con la proveedora inglesa, con la que llegaron un acuerdo a mediados de año. Comenzaron con Katherine Legge y Sébastien Bourdais como pilotos, pero por la falta de plantas Chevy, desde Indianapolis corrieron con sólo un auto (a excepción de Sonoma). Aún así, el francés consiguió un cuarto lugar en Mid-Ohio. mientras que la inglesa llegó en noveno en Fontana (ambos siendo sus mejores resultados).
Ahora, el equipo del hijo del “Capitán” volverá a tener dos autos de tiempo completo: en noviembre de 2012, se oficializó una extensión de contrato de Bourdais, tetracampeón de la extinta serie Champ Car, y portará el #7, mientras Saavedra tendrá el #6 y portará el patrocinio de TRUECAR, ex auspiciante de Katherine Legge.
