El día de ayer, se dio a conocer el nuevo trofeo que se llevará el campeón de la IZOD IndyCar Series este domingo, en Las Vegas, Nevada. Con Dario Franchitti y Will Power como principales personajes, Randy Bernard, CEO de la categoría, reveló dicho trofeo en el Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino.
El trofeo es uno de los más importantes en la historia del automovilismo americano, comparado, entre otros, con la Vanderbilt Cup, el cual más recientemente se usó en Champ Car. Se trata del Astor Cup, nombrado así gracias a Vincent Astor, el comisonado de una competencia llamada Astor Cup Challenge, carrera que se llevó a cabo en 1915 y 1916. La primera edición de este evento otorgó USD $50,000 al ganador, el doble de la bolsa acumulada de las «500 millas de Indianápolis» de ese año.
El trofeo es de plata de ley, y tiene enmarcados los nombres de todos los campeones nacionales de categorías de autos fórmula desde 1909. Existe una réplica que estará en exposición en el «Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum».
